29 Awesome things about being 29

pcollage

I’ve just turned 29 years old. God. I remember the time when I was 18! Time flies, it surely does. My twenties are almost behind me  and I don’t know whether I should be thinking about getting botox or not. (joke). Ageing is part of life, but, as trite as it may sound, you really are only as old as you think you are. I feel as young as I did in my mid twenties and of course.. I’ve gained life lessons along the way.. I hope. I know now, that change is inevitable. I have changed a thousand times and yet I have always held on to the essence that is me. I know myself and now more than I ever did before. I can only imagine how I will feel at 30, 45, 70,  95 and 100 if I get that far that is. I am so excited for this lifelong adventure! For my birthday getaway, I spent four days in a small island in the south of Taiwan (Penghu) and since it rained the whole time, I had the time to think of 29 Awesome Things About Being 29!  I hope you enjoy the read.

1. I give less of a shit about most things.

2. Your best years are not over yet. My best years have happened, are happening now and are in the future. Every year brings so many bests moments and hopefully, we all find it impossible to define just one time of our lives as the best.

3. I met the love of my life at 26 and married him a year later. Life is full of surprises! One minute you’re a singleton and the next thing you know you could be swept off your feet.

4. You can hang out with younger people, and still claim ‘being in your twenties,’ but also hang around with thirty-somethings and feel even younger.

5. Getting ready takes five minutes.

I used to apply mascara to workout at the gym.

6. I actually remember watching music videos on MTV and VH1.

7. Going to the movies alone is No Big Deal.

8. I’ve stopped lying about having seen a certain movie or read a certain book.

9. You recall your early twenties and… wonder What on earth were you thinking???

10. You wear what’s comfortable. (Most of the time).

11. I look better than I ever did in my early twenties. All those times working out and taking care of myself in my early twenties  have paid off.

12. Saying No is an important skill. It helps us to protect our most precious resource: our time and energy. In my 20’s, there was a period of time where I was always quick to say “Yes!”—yes to social events, yes to busyness, yes to happy hours, yes to plans that didn’t serve me. I was able to gain back pieces of my day and my energy by saying No.

13. If you really do get better with age, you will find that you have less judgement to give, less comparisons to make and more compassion for each and every single person you meet. Because really judgement is a waste of time. Comparison is blinding. Both of which will shrink our energy. Expand, grow, strip away ego by letting go of both.

14. 11 pm is an acceptable time to go to bed.

15.  All the expectations about who and where you should be in life by the time you reached 30 were pretty unrealistic and immature.

16. Having snacks as meals makes me feel young again.

17.  I don’t mind telling anyone to take a hike  and not feel bad about it. And there’s really less time for anyone’s nonsense.

18. Travelling and living abroad for many years makes you more worldly and the experiences are priceless.

19. Staying in with your loved one on the weekend is just one of best things to do .

20.  The world is full of awesome strangers. Talk to them.

21.  Learning languages is fun! (not easy as it used to be).

22. Appreciating what you have. Yet another great thing about turning 29 is that it makes me appreciate more than ever before my good health, wonderful people in my life, and numerous other things which I am incredibly thankful for.

23. I can actually recall the fun times now because a lot of them are done sober. They are not vague memories that I  struggle to remember through an alcohol haze. Potlucks and game nights? Sign me up!

24.  My radar is spot on. I can sense toxic people a mile away.

25. Admittedly I feel some effects of ageing, which motivates me to eat healthy and exercise. What’s awesome is, you see a lot of your peers going through this very same transformation.

26.  You know what you want. Of course it takes some wrong turns to finally get it right, but that makes the journey all the worth.

28. Taking risks isn’t so bad.

29. Life is so much less terrifying. You’ll never again feel the terror you felt in those years right after graduation, when you thought that you might be the only person in the world who was not going to figure out their life.
