Chinese New Year Fashion and Beauty Traditions You Can Follow

I don’t know about you, but I’m a kind of gal who loves to get dolled up. You’ve already said Hello to Year 2018, but did you know the Chinese New Year’s looming (same week as Valentine’s day)? Anyway, it’d be a great excuse for you (me) to pull out your sparkly dresses or your favourite going out looks to celebrate the Year of the Dog.

For CNY, go shopping!

Do you think fashion can influence our fate? In China, it is believed that the clothes you wear can bring good luck and harmony. New clothes are bought (a great excuse for shopping) to mark a fresh start to the New Year.

A fresh start means enhancing your appearance, as well. Many Chinese take time to get a new haircut and spruce up their nails. In short, look their best for the days leading up to the New Year.
Even if you don’t celebrate the Chinese Holiday, try out one of the fashion and beauty rituals that I discovered living in Taiwan.

All Shades of Red

It’s  a no brainer that Red is the key color of Chinese New Year. Red represents happiness, wealth (more money please) and prosperity. No wonder red lanterns to red envelopes and all things red are omnipresent in this period.

Besides, wearing doses of red in your outfit is a must. But what if bright red or head-to-toe red isn’t your thing? Reach for burgundy or maroon. You can team it with dark neutral colours like grey and navy blue for a ready winter-look.

Whatever you do, avoid black and white as they’re considered bad luck!

Here’s another one. For maximum luck, wear red underwear! Vday is just around the corner, so it”d be great to add sexy underwear to your list.

Gold and Glitter

Wearing Gold also means more wealth. Add a touch of gold in clothing details or accessories, such as belts, scarves or jewelry. Add some glamour elements like sequins and a bit of sparkling details in your look. It would highlight one’s chic look. Be ready to shine!

Lips and Nails

Doll up your nails to match the festive season.  Reds and gold colours are the usual shades that most go for, with some additional nail art to add the fun.

For a fresh romantic look,  try lipsticks by Mac, in hues of  soft peach and blossom-pink, and softly wash cheeks in two-toned Powder Blush, from The Lunar New Year collection. If you’re feeling bolder, try a  powerful red lip.

Thank you for reading! I truly hope at least one of these rituals will bring you a better year!

To 2018, wishing you all the good luck, fortune, and happiness.
