One of the perks of living in Taiwan is you get the chance to discover the little charms and marvels of the country. During my trip to Taichung last week I was more than thrilled to discover an interesting village.  A  ‘military dependents’ village’ in fact. It was built in the late 1940s and the 1950s to serve as provisional housing for Nationalist soldiers, but they eventually became permanent settlements. Like many military dependents’ villages, they endure urban problems such as abandonment, urban decay, and even urban slum. The village was transformed from run down to becoming a tourist attraction and now known as ‘Rainbow Village’ (彩虹眷村). With colourful and vivid illustrations, no wonder tourists flock here to take awesome photos. The walls are adorned with vibrant paintings of animals, plants, aboriginal people and even celebrities. Now you might be thinking why it came to be. Well I did.  This was the work of an 86-year-old veteran from Taichung City. In fear that the village would be demolished for redevelopment, he drew all of the illustrations in the effort to save it. However small the place is, this gorgeous village is worth a visit and you’ll see that it’s more than an art exhibition.

Would you visit this place? Tell me what you think 🙂
